Are you a Playstation 3 user and finding yourself in an unfortunate situation of having problems with this great console? This website is dedicated to the sensitive Playstation 3 support topics.
Everyone wants to swiftly install and hookup their newly bought console as well as surely nobody likes having YLOD or no video the moment they gather up with their friends to play another round of Modern Warfare 3.
Playstation 3, even though being a product of genious japanese design and reliability, still is a piece of electronic hardware and thus can be tricky to deal with or it can eve malnufunction. Sometimes, these problems are little and solved naturally or by an eternal method of “power down. power up” but at the other times it might be somewhat more complicated to deal with. This page features a frequently updated list of most conserning questions that are not covered by the official playstation 3 support pages.
Q: I’m looking for the generic Playstation 3 support website / installation tips
A: All of that could be easily found on the dedicated Sony Playstation 3 support websites. If you follow to the playstation.com website, you will be able to choose your local language/country of residense. Afterwards, scroll to the bottom of the page where you’ll be able to find a support like. Sometimes it requires a magnifying glass, but it’s definetely there. At times, it might be differently titled too, for example PS3 support, or Playstation 3 Support or it might just be generally titled Product Support.
For your convinience I’ve also included direct links to the Playstation 3 Support websites below. The official US PS3 support page is located here. Direct Sony support numbers for Playstations can be found at the bottom of this page.
This page covers questions not attended to on the official pages.

Q: I’m looking for the Playstation 3 / Playstation 3 accessories manuals
A: Same as the above, these can be easily obtained on the official Sony support webpages. For your covenience I’m including a direct link to the US manuals page, manuals in the other languages may not be always available, but if they are then the best place to find them is the official support site in your language, that is, if there is actually one ![]()
English Playstation 3 manuals can be found through this link.
A: Please read the “YLOD Yellow Light of Death. Blinking Red Lights.” support article.
Q: My Playstation 3 has a red light flashing/blinking!
A: You could use it as a pretty illumination gadget now. But seriously, it’s same as the above. Please read the “YLOD Yellow Light of Death. Blinking Red Lights.” support article.
Q: When I turn on my Playstation 3 (randomly during it’s operation) I get a red screen telling that a serious error has occured!
A: And that’s probably exactly what’s happened, a serious error. Please read the “Playstation 3 RSD Red Screen of Death” support article.
Q: My Playstation 3 won’t read any game or any other discs.
A: This is most likely related to the Blu Ray drive’s laser getting dusty/damaged/displaced. Please read the “Playstation 3 Disc Read Error” support article.
Q: My console freezes up when playing games after XX seconds/minutes/hours or at the specific screens.
A: Are you sure you’re playing games properly rated for your age?
If it’s not about your parents making distant signs so you’d go to bed, then you might be facing one of a wide array of problems ranging from simple software to the complicated hardware ones. Please refer to the “Playstation 3 Freeze Ups” support article.
Q: I get no video when I connect my Playstation 3 with AV/composite/HDMI out.
A: It may be a software error which is easy to fix or you’re facing a burnt connection which can only be remedied by sending your console in for repairs. Anyway, refer to the “Playstation 3 No Signal Error” support article.
Q: My console powers down after XX minutes of activity.
A: There is a probability of overheating. You might need to refer to a ps3 repair guide on how to change the thermal paste inside the console or even send it back to Sony for repairs. This issue might lead to YLOD/red lights in the future, so it’s best to solve it as soon as possible to avoid unhappy downtime hours and having to hang out with your friends outside and paying attention to your girlfriend. There is also a possible event of having a faulty power supply (sometimes, although rarely, it happens right when a unit comes out of a factory) in this case you’d need to replace it or, again, send it in for repairs.
Q: I’d like to perform maintenance on my unit/I’m starting a PS3 repair service/My warranty is out but I need a quick unit repair
A: This is actually a common issue these days, and there is no better solution to this than a Playstation 3 repair guide. There are a few detailed ones out in the net and print these days, and I personally can recommend one which is very easy to follow and allows you to service most problems with your console at home within just a few hours. Refer to the PS3 Repair Guide website if you’re interested (and you know you are!).
In the event of your console freezing/not reading discs/some other software problems you might want to try a hardware reset. Below I’m going to explain the process of resetting your console back to the default settings, which might not work on the newer models (I think this feature was removed at some point, although i’m not sure as I do not own any newer model PS3) but trying won’t hurt.
There is also a decent YouTube video made by a couple of guys if you prefer a more “visual” approach, although I’m sure that I’ll explain the process as clearly as it’s only humanly possible! ![]()
If the problem is software caused it WILL go away, otherwise you will have to get a repair guide or return your console to Sony or a local service.
Step 1. Disconnect all USB devices, if there are any, including controller, from your Playstation 3. Power off the console using the power switch on the back. Wait a few seconds, power it back again. The red power LED should come up.
Step 2. Press and HOLD the power button, do not release it until I say you can or the earth will blow up, you definetely don’t want to be remembered as a destroyer of Earth. Leave that to the aliens.
You will hear first beep. Keep holding. There goes second beep and probably a green light would come up. Keep holding until you hear the third beep, then you may let the poor power button go and wipe any sweat off your forehead. At this point the LED should return to being RED and nothing should be displayed on your TV. Let it sit like that for about 10-15 seconds.
Step 3. HOLD DOWN the power button again, just not too eagerly or it might break
and you’d definetely have to send it to Sony. You will hear one beep, after a short while second one, and then you will hear a double beep. At this point, a message will appear on your TV and you can let go of your veteran button.
Step 4. Plug in your controller via USB cable, press the PS button and you’ll get into the restore menu. Of a particular interest there are the options 3, 4 and 5 which are, respectively, Restore File System, Rebuild Database and Restore PS3 system.
If case your PS3′s been freezing, use the Restore File System option. It will totally wipe any data you had on your harddrive and settings etc, but it should stop the freezing in many cases.
If you had a disc read error, use the Rebuild Database option and that would probably help. Doing so won’t remove any of your data or settings.
In the event this doesn’t help you might want to be looking into a PS3 Repair Guide which explains on how to fix more difficult problems in just a few hours at home, or sending the console in for repairs to Sony or locally. You might also want to read other support articles here.
In the event you need a direct Playsation 3 support from Sony, for example, if you actually need to send your unit in for their professional care, please use the following details to contact them. You should be aware that their handling times can be somewhat slow at times, so please be patient when calling as wait time might be quite considerable before you’re actually connected to a representative.
